Mrs. Van Horn: Super fan supports Panthers

Panthers Football re-created in yard

Yvonne Van Horn took a Central Panthers yard sign honoring her grandson to the next level when she decided to honor the entire team.
"I just thought, you know, there's got to be more to this than just that sign," she said. "He has team members. Let's do a team field."
She started with footballs, then added players, goal posts, water bottles, a Gatorade towel and cooler – re-creating Panther Stadium in her lawn on Gwinn Street.
Her grandson, Ryan Perkins, is a student-athlete at Central High School. He plays football, baseball, track and field, and wrestling – an "all-around athlete," Mrs. Van Horn said.
"I'm an avid sports fan," she noted. "They call me the 'sports grammy.'"
Ryan and his friends have been playing sports since they were kids in Monmouth-Independence Kids Incorporated. She has thoroughly enjoyed watching them play over the years.
Each week, Mrs. Van Horn has to carefully disassemble the field and put it back together for regular field maintenance. The grass grows too high to really see the yard lines, she said.
It's a lot of work, but she does it to honor the student-athletes on the Panthers team. It's her way to show her appreciation.
"It's my way to pay back the boys for letting me come and see them play a sport that they all thoroughly love and enjoy and hope to go on and play bigger and better football," she said. "It's a family. They're teammates. They're brothers."
Join Mrs. Van Horn Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. for the Central High School Homecoming game at Panther Stadium.
This house on Gwinn Street is made to look like Panther Stadium, with white yard lines, footballs and players neatly placed.
